Moriah City of Refuge Worship Center History

Moriah is a Pentecostal, faith-based church with a kingdom mindset. Our primary focus is to bring souls to the Kingdom regardless of race, creed, or color. We have developed programs that assist at-risk youth, adult men and women who need a new start, marriages, hurting hearts, and much more.

Moriah City of Refuge was founded by our Pastor, Thomas J. Rodgers II, in April 2007. Three years before the church's opening, the Lord placed a vision for it on Pastor Rodgers’ heart. He served in various ministries at his home church, Miracle Temple Complex, COGIC, including evangelism, outreach, and youth ministry. His humble call to pastoral duties has inspired him to pursue kingdom work with greater determination. After receiving blessings from his mother and father, Pastor Rodgers established his own ministry, starting in a hotel with fifteen members. This initial group included his wife, three children, two sisters-in-law, and their children. He was trusting God to grow the ministry.

In November 2007, the church relocated from the hotel to a small building in Ferguson that accommodated approximately 65 people. The Bible encourages us not to despise small beginnings, and we thank God for our humble starts. While the building was small, the church successfully maintained effective youth programs, outreach, singles outings, and other adult gatherings.

While Pastor Rodgers was thankful for the space, the Church required more room. The Lord was expanding Moriah’s territory. The Church started to outgrow the space more quickly than anticipated. By the grace of God, the Church membership doubled in six months.

From 2009 to 2014, Moriah underwent some shifts and growth through a church evangelism ministry, but we continue to follow the leading of the Lord. God keeps providing us with manna from on high.

From 2015 to 2017, we worshipped at 7291 Natural Bridge Road, where we experienced God's movement and felt the presence of the Angels in the building. Membership grew, allowing us to build partnerships with community leaders and other organizations to expand the Kingdom.

In 2018, Moriah City of Refuge worshipped at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. We were unable to renew our contract, but God opened new doors.

In 2019, we moved to 5562 Wells Avenue, where God was actively blessing us.

In March 2020, many churches began closing their doors at the beginning of the COVID outbreak, following CDC regulations. The opportunity for fellowship seemed bleak, but God blessed Moriah with the ability to fellowship using virtual platforms. Our God is awesome. While it appeared that we would possibly lose members, God increased our membership by using the virtual platforms.

In February 2021, amid a global pandemic, God opened a door for Moriah City of Refuge. A pastor reached out to Pastor Thomas Rodgers, inquiring if he was seeking a church. God blessed us with a church that fulfilled the needs of Moriah City of Refuge perfectly. This became our new home, 4145 West Carter Ave.

Until God blessed us with a permanent place of worship, He guided the Church to maintain its spiritual integrity during the valleys of our church’s migratory years. Throughout this journey, God has remained faithful to the ministry both naturally and spiritually. Each move was led by the Spirit, with God’s presence evident through testimonies of victory. Today, God continues to bless and grow the Church tremendously. Moriah City of Refuge Worship Center, COGIC, strives to be the church that God has called it to be without conforming to the culture of the day. We have witnessed God perform the impossible, and we are excited to keep spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the entire world.

In March 2021, God blessed the ministry with a permanent location in the heart of St. Louis, MO, at 4145-47 W Carter Ave. The ministry grew not just virtual; people now look at it virtually through Zoom teaching and online streaming via YouTube, Facebook, and the church website. God was not finished expanding the territory of Moriah City of Refuge. Our latest chapter has led us to merge with our Mother Church, Miracle Temple Church Complex COGIC. This merger is the beginning of the next level of God’s Power being poured on His people to do Jesus' will in the last days.
